The music world was stunned this week by news of Akon’s brief detention in Georgia. The Grammy-nominated artist, known for chart-topping hits of the 2000s, found himself in police custody after an outstanding warrant surfaced.
Authorities in Chamblee, Georgia, took Aliaune Thiam – Akon’s given name – into custody on the morning of November 7th. The warrant originated from Roswell, stemming from a traffic stop two months prior.
The incident began in September when officers discovered Akon stranded with a dead battery in his Tesla Cybertruck. A routine tow led to a startling discovery: Akon’s driver’s license was suspended.
Further investigation revealed the suspension was due to a failure to appear in court earlier in the year, in January 2023. Officers issued a citation, confiscated his license, and also discovered an illegal vape in his possession.
This led to the issuance of a bench warrant, which was finally executed on November 7th. Akon was booked and held for several hours at the DeKalb County jail before being released later that day.
