The photographs depict North Korean soldiers meticulously scanning the ravaged landscape with detection equipment, absorbing instructions from their Russian counterparts, and even breaking into patriotic song before commencing the dangerous task. A Russian commander, known as "Veles," offered a striking assessment: “They’re great lads, they learn quickly, listen attentively and take notes.”
Another Russian commander, "Lesnik," went further, asserting the North Korean sappers are operating “on an equal level with my sappers, carrying out the same tasks as my guys.” This suggests a level of integration and trust rarely seen in such collaborative military efforts.
The deployment follows intense fighting last year, where a major Ukrainian incursion threatened to breach the western Kursk region. While Russia claims the North Korean assistance was crucial in repelling the attack, reports suggest a far more sobering reality behind the numbers.
Estimates, originating from South Korean, Ukrainian, and Western sources, indicate that approximately 14,000 North Korean troops were dispatched under a mutual defense pact.
