The Christmas music battlefield just gained a formidable, and surprisingly pink, contender. Peppa Pig, the globally beloved cartoon character, has officially launched a bid for the coveted Christmas number one spot with a brand new single.
The announcement came during a live broadcast on Good Morning Britain, interrupting the usual schedule with “urgent news from Peppaland.” Entertainment Editor Richard Arnold teased the reveal, building anticipation before Peppa herself chimed in with a festive promise of a “Christmas classic.”
That classic? A reimagining of Wham!’s iconic “Last Christmas.” But this isn’t simply a cover; the lyrics have been playfully altered to celebrate a very special occasion – the arrival of Peppa’s new baby sister, Evie, born earlier this year.
The updated lyrics reflect this joyous addition to the Peppa Pig family. “Last Christmas was great from the start,” the song now proclaims, “and the very best day in every way / This year, now Evie is here, it’s gonna be extra special.”
The internet reacted swiftly, with opinions sharply divided. Some expressed dismay, recalling a previous Peppa Pig Christmas song deemed less than stellar. Others braced for a fierce chart battle, comparing the impending clash to the summer’s blockbuster rivalry between “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.”
Peppa isn’t entering this contest unprepared. She’s facing off against the Caregivers Choir and their rendition of Robbie Williams’ “Angels,” setting the stage for a December showdown. This isn’t her first attempt at chart domination, however.
Six years ago, Peppa boldly declared her intention to “steal” the Christmas number one from Robbie Williams with an original song, “Bing Bong Christmas.” While that attempt ultimately fell short – thankfully, she stepped aside to allow LadBaby’s “I Love Sausage Rolls” to claim the crown – the memory remains vivid.
Now, with LadBaby retired from the Christmas song arena, Peppa is back, seemingly determined to finally achieve festive supremacy. Some fans even speculate that conceding this year’s number one might dissuade her from future bids.
The race is on, and the contenders are set. Alongside Peppa and the Caregivers Choir, Mariah Carey’s perennial favorite “All I Want for Christmas is You” looms large, alongside tracks from Alison Limerick, Taylor Swift, and Huntrx/KPop Demon Hunters. This Christmas promises a chart battle for the ages.
