Thanksgiving evening shattered for one Lake County family when a heated argument escalated into a terrifying act of destruction. A 21-year-old man, Erik J. Crump, now faces serious charges after allegedly setting his family’s home ablaze.
Deputies initially responded to the Beach Park residence around 7:30 p.m. following reports of a disturbance. Family members described Crump as deliberately provoking conflict, though the initial interaction didn’t warrant criminal charges.
Officers successfully de-escalated the situation, and Crump agreed to spend the remainder of the evening away from his family. This fragile peace lasted less than an hour.
A frantic call brought deputies rushing back to the same address, this time to find the home engulfed in flames. Firefighters arrived to a harrowing scene, and quickly spotted a man matching Crump’s description standing nearby, wielding a knife.
Crump immediately fled the area, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. A K9 unit tracked his scent to a dead end, suggesting he’d escaped in a vehicle.
