Owen Sound bail suspect flees, hits police cruiser

Owen Sound bail suspect flees, hits police cruiser

City police arrested a 24-year-old man from Owen Sound after a series of dangerous incidents on Sunday.

The individual was on parole and subject to bail conditions, including a GPS ankle monitor. At approximately 4:50 p.m., officers attempted to detain him while he was operating a pickup truck and he resisted.

During the confrontation, the man started the truck and fled, striking a police cruiser and narrowly missing officers. He then drove onto a sidewalk, forcing a young woman and a family with a child in a stroller to take evasive action; no one was injured.

Police later discovered that the required GPS device had been deliberately removed and discarded. The abandoned truck was located shortly after, prompting a joint search with the provincial police.

Using K9 units and aviation support, officers found the suspect attempting to break into an occupied residence and placed him under arrest.

The man now faces multiple charges under the Criminal Code and the Highway Traffic Act. He has been referred to the Intensive Serious Violent Crime Bail Program because of the serious risk he poses to the community.
