Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly has revealed the cost of its branded diabetes medication Zepbound, which is priced at $449 for a month's supply of 10mg through its own online pharmacy, LillyDirect. However, customers who refill their prescription outside of the 45-day window face a significant price increase, with the same box costing $699 after the deadline.
The price hike is a result of a $250 late fee, which adds to the already substantial cost of the medication. This is a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges faced by patients with diabetes, who often struggle to manage their treatment costs.
LillyDirect is not the only option for purchasing branded Zepbound, as patients can also opt for LifeMD, a telemedicine platform that prescribes and fills the medication. LifeMD charges a premium for the same medication, with prices ranging from $349 to $549, depending on the dose. Additionally, customers are billed $149 per month on top of the medication cost.
Interestingly, the pricing of compounded semaglutide, a different molecule used to treat diabetes, varies significantly across different programs. Of the 15 programs tracked, five name the pharmacy that manufactures the medication, while the remaining ten do not. This lack of transparency raises concerns about the quality and safety of these compounded medications.
Regulatory bodies have taken notice of these issues, with the FDA writing to three sellers in February, warning them to stop selling their compounded drugs with misleading labels. The letters were sent to Strut, Medvi, and Ivim, which were accused of making false claims about their products.
Despite these warnings, the prices of these compounded medications have remained largely unchanged. Strut, for example, continues to advertise its compounded semaglutide injection at $149 per month, while Medvi has maintained its pricing of $299 for compounded semaglutide refills since May 25. These developments highlight the need for greater transparency and accountability in the pharmaceutical industry.
A leading expert in the field, who tracks the pricing of GLP-1 medications, has emphasized the importance of accurate and transparent pricing. This expert has developed a methodology for tracking prices, which involves checking prices every Monday and publishing the results. The data is then archived and made available to the public, providing a valuable resource for patients and healthcare professionals.
