The reversal of a nationwide ban on ICE vehicle stops by President Donald Trump has been met with relief by many ICE agents. According to a federal special agent working deportations, the president's action has shown confidence in the agency and its people.
The agent, who spoke with Fox News Digital on the condition of anonymity, said that concerns that prompted the pause – a need for additional training for ICE agents on adversarial vehicle stops – are still being addressed. The agent noted that the president's action has been a huge boost for many ICE agents on the ground.
The agent described the president's message as a reassuring one, stating that it showed he still believes in law enforcement professionals to get the job done. "Today, when the president came out with his un-pause, I think what he showed was confidence in the agency and its people, and I think that goes a long way when somebody is in one of those difficult situations," said the agent.
The Department of Homeland Security had paused ICE vehicle stops after two ICE officer-involved shootings in Maine and Texas. However, the guidance was short-lived, as the next day President Donald Trump instructed the agency to reverse course.
The reversal of the ban on ICE vehicle stops has been seen as a positive move by many, particularly in light of the increasingly stressful and unpredictable environments that ICE agents are operating in. The agent noted that illegal immigrants have grown more adversarial during arrests, increasing the danger of operations for both the arrestee and law enforcement.
The agent also highlighted the prevalence of interference and even violent confrontation by civilian bystanders during operations. This has led to a situation where agents are operating in increasingly stressful, unpredictable environments.
The agent likened ending all vehicle stops to removing a tool from a toolbox, stating that it would create challenges for agents to do their job in a more efficient way. However, the agent noted that they would "welcome" even more training for officers, particularly in responding to riot-type situations.
The agent concluded that any sane person would agree that the focus should be on making operations safer for everyone involved. "They should constantly be looking at these policies and how they affect the people in the field, but also how it's perceived by the public, how legal it is, and how do we do this more safe?" the agent said.
