A partially mummified set of remains discovered in a Suffolk river has reignited a six‑year‑old homicide investigation. The remains, found in black bin bags, belong to an unidentified man now referred to as the “Croft Man.”
Radiocarbon analysis indicates the victim was born before the early 1950s and died between 2008 and 2012, placing his age at roughly 60 to 70 years at the time of death. DNA testing suggests he was a white northern European male with blonde or light hair and blue or green eyes.
The coroner observed that the removal of the victim’s hands and extensive head injuries appear to have been intended to hinder identification. The pathologist noted multiple blows to the head and described the skull damage as excessive for a dismemberment scenario.
Based on the forensic evidence, the coroner concluded it is “more likely than not” that the Croft Man was unlawfully killed. The inquest highlighted the tragedy of an unidentified individual who likely had family and friends still searching for answers.
Dog walker Julie Dunn‑Beechin first spotted two black bin bags floating in the water, prompting her to alert a park ranger. The ranger reported seeing what resembled mummified skin and bone through a small opening in one bag, along with rocks, bricks, a partially dissolved cleaning product, and an arm ball joint.
Police conducted a fingertip search of the riverbed two days later, uncovering a third bag containing additional fragments of the victim’s remains. The investigation estimates the bags were deposited in the river between August 13 and 19, roughly two weeks before their discovery.
Superintendent Mike Brown indicated that the circumstances suggest involvement of a criminal element with possible butchery skills. He emphasized that the prolonged storage of the body points to an effort to conceal the crime from authorities.
Despite extensive forensic work, the victim’s identity remains unknown, leaving a gap for any surviving relatives. The case continues to be examined for new leads that could finally resolve the mystery surrounding the Croft Man’s death.
