Neighbour objects to parents calling children in for pickup

In a suburban neighborhood, parents have taken to the front lawns to let their children enjoy summer play, sparking a debate over noise levels and community norms.

A complaint was filed against parents who allow children to remain outdoors until dinner time, a practice some residents describe as “barmy.” The allegation centers on the belief that children should be called in at a set hour, but many parents argue that the children are simply enjoying a normal part of their day.

One mother noted that her daughter is often on social media, gaming, and using a tablet, and she worries that the community will judge her for these activities rather than for the outdoor noise.

The complaint was that parents were shouting at their children to come inside following playtime on the communal grass area. Families were stunned after receiving letters warning them to keep the noise down after complaints about children being called home from the communal grass area. Housing association Amplius said it takes noise nuisance seriously and warned it "may arrange noise monitoring" in the future. In a letter to residents on Viscount Close in Pinchbeck, Lincs., it said: "The report refers to shouting in a communal area, shouting children to come inside following playtime on communal grass area and indicates that it may be occurring at various times, including during the daytime and evening." Another father, who has two children, stated that the youngsters are primary school aged and prefer longer play sessions. He added that the children are not shouting or swearing when asked to come inside.

The housing association, which manages over 40,000 homes, said the noise complaint falls under its anti‑social behaviour policy and that it is committed to maintaining peaceful communities.

In response, the association has written to affected residents, offering the use of a noise‑recording app to document any nuisance and to address allegations more effectively.

A resident expressed frustration, suggesting that those who file complaints should reconsider their own actions.
