Sean McCann, 21, will represent Scotland in the freestyle events at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, beginning on July 23, marking his senior international debut.
The younger brother of Madeleine, who disappeared in Portugal in 2007, McCann continues a family legacy of high‑level swimming; his twin sister Amelie also competes for Team Scotland.
A Loughborough‑trained athlete, McCann previously swam for Scotland at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games, finishing fifth in the 400 m freestyle and seventh in the 1500 m freestyle.
He entered competitive sport at eight through a local triathlon club, discovered a passion for swimming, and joined a dedicated swimming club to increase his training frequency.
By age ten he was selected for a performance swimming program in Leicester, subsequently collecting multiple county titles and achieving regional and national championships in his age group.
Since age eleven he has adhered to a rigorous schedule, rising at 4 a.m. for early sessions, while balancing a chemical engineering degree with nine pool workouts and three gym sessions each week, totaling over 20 hours of training.
McCann aims to qualify for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and set his sights on the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, using upcoming national championships to gain race experience ahead of the Olympic trials scheduled for April 2024.
