The operator, who has managed the president’s teleprompter since 2016, is accused of timing wagers on specific words and phrases that were later confirmed or omitted in the speeches. Reports indicate that he may have withdrawn from some bets when the president skipped a section that included a previously mentioned word.
A betting platform that allows users to speculate on whether particular terms will appear in a speech alerted regulators to suspicious trading activity. The regulator’s surveillance team flagged the trades and referred them to federal authorities.
