Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has expressed his enthusiasm for Argentine World Cup star Julian Alvarez, urging Arsenal to sign the 26-year-old striker.
Alvarez has enjoyed an impressive goalscoring record at Manchester City, scoring 36 goals across two seasons despite playing back-up to Norwegian superstar Erling Haaland. Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta believes Alvarez can bring much-needed spark to the team's attack.
However, Atletico Madrid are reportedly demanding well over £100m for Alvarez, a figure that Arsenal are reluctant to pay. Scholes has spoken out in favor of the move, saying that any big club should be willing to meet Atletico's demands to secure Alvarez's services.
Alvarez's current focus is on Argentina's World Cup semi-final against England on Wednesday night, with a final against France or Spain potentially to follow.
Scholes described Alvarez as a "match-winner" and said that he would be a perfect partner for an out-and-out centre-forward like Viktor Gyokeres. There are still question marks over Gyokeres' ability despite his strong second-half to the season.
Arteta is also considering an official bid for Alvarez, and the team is keeping tabs on several midfielders, including England's Morgan Rogers and Newcastle United's Bruno Guimaraes.
Scholes' former United and England teammate Nicky Butt added that Alvarez would be a perfect signing for Arsenal, and that he would be a great fit for the team's current squad.
