Travel expert and host Samantha Brown has accumulated over 2.5 million miles of travel experience and visited more than 65 countries throughout her career. Recently, she embarked on a multi-year Route 66 road trip, adding 2,448 miles to her total and covering all eight states along the Mother Road.
The history of Route 66 is fascinating, and Brown has expressed her admiration for the route's significance. "The history of Route 66 is fascinating, and I met so many wonderful people. That's why it's called the Mother Road; it really is what gave birth to this nation's tenacity, spirit, and incredible optimism," she said.
As the 100th anniversary of Route 66 approaches on November 11, 2026, Brown shared some essential items to pack for a road trip. She emphasized the importance of flexibility and comfort, suggesting that travelers should be prepared for unexpected situations and maintain a relaxed atmosphere.

When it comes to entertainment, Brown recommends packing a Frisbee or ball to break the monotony of long drives. This can also serve as a mental and physical reset for travelers who spend hours cooped up in the car. In addition, she suggests packing snacks and water to avoid frequent stops at gas stations.
A well-rounded emergency kit is also crucial for a safe and enjoyable road trip. This should include jumper cables, tire repair tools, a flashlight, a portable air compressor, safety gear, and a first-aid kit. Wet wipes can also come in handy for cleaning up sticky hands or dealing with questionable gas station pumps.
A portable charger is another essential item to pack, especially for travelers with multiple devices to charge. Brown also recommends traveling in comfortable clothing that can easily transition from car to outdoor activities.

Games and activities can help pass the time and alleviate boredom during long drives. Travelers can look for license plates from all 50 states, play car bingo, or use a reusable games activity book to keep children engaged.
Don't forget to pack sunglasses, trash bags, and a map or guidebook to help navigate unfamiliar routes. Anti-nausea bracelets or medicine can also be helpful for travelers prone to travel-related tummy troubles.
Finally, consider investing in an AAA membership, which provides roadside assistance, travel planning services, and discounted theme park and attraction tickets. Downloaded maps and entertainment can also be beneficial for travelers with spotty cell service.
