The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is threatening to seize a Tennessee man's farm after charging him interest on a $20,000 refund it accidentally sent him in 2022.
The man, 76-year-old Wilson Perry Kirby, received the accidental refund on May 10, 2022, and immediately tried to return the unspent money through his accountant.
More than four years later, Kirby is still fighting the IRS, as the agency is withholding his $1,800 refund from 2025 and threatening to seize his Coopertown farm over interest charges of up to $4,300.
Kirby claims that despite reaching out to various officials, including the President and local government representatives, he has been unable to receive assistance in resolving the matter.
“I've tried the president, governor, mayor. They don't mind asking you to vote for them, but when you need help you can't get a hold of nobody,” Kirby said.
Kirby believes that the issue was resolved earlier this year when he heard from a U.S. Senator, but the IRS continues to send him letters and make harassing phone calls.
The prolonged fight with the IRS has taken an emotional toll on Kirby, who says he has cried and is on the verge of tears.
Tennessee GOP Senator Bill Hagerty has expressed concern for Kirby's situation and has directed his office to look into the matter and offer assistance.
