A terrifying ordeal unfolded in Greenville, North Carolina, leaving one person hospitalized after a brutal home invasion. Authorities have now made a third arrest in connection with the February 11th incident, a case marked by violence and alleged sexual assault.
John Carlos Calderon, 22, of Greenville, was taken into custody Monday, joining Jonathan David Garcia-Lario, 20, and Zaid Mayen, 21, as suspects in the harrowing attack. The victim endured a night of terror, allegedly facing kidnapping, burglary, and a horrific sexual assault.
Detectives swiftly moved to apprehend the suspects, with Garcia-Lario and Mayen taken into custody last Friday. Evidence discovered in Chapel Hill, Mayen’s residence approximately two hours from the crime scene, further solidified the investigation.
The charges against all three men are severe, each facing first-degree felony counts including forcible sexual assault, kidnapping, burglary, and assault with a deadly weapon causing grievous harm. The gravity of these accusations underscores the brutality of the alleged crimes.
Federal authorities have been notified, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) placing detainers on Garcia-Lario and Mayen, ensuring their continued custody as federal agents prepare to take over the case. Calderon’s immigration status is currently under investigation.
The Pitt County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the collaborative effort that led to these arrests, acknowledging the crucial assistance provided by the U.S. Marshals Service, Chapel Hill Police Department, and specialized forensic units. This coordinated response highlights the dedication to bringing those responsible to justice.
While authorities confirmed the victim was transported to a local hospital by ambulance, details regarding the extent of their injuries remain undisclosed. The focus now shifts to supporting the victim and ensuring a thorough prosecution of the accused.
All three suspects are currently being held without bond – Garcia-Lario and Calderon at the Pitt County Detention Center, and Mayen at the Orange County Detention Center – awaiting the next stages of the legal process.
