Kaylee Hottle, a 19-year-old actress known for her roles in the Godzilla franchise, has died in a car accident. The incident occurred just before 3am when the vehicle Hottle was in swerved into a culvert at high speed.
Her father, Joshua Hottle, revealed the news of her death in a 23-minute livestream on Facebook, sharing in American Sign Language that she had died after being involved in a car accident in Maryland. The late actress was best known for starring as Jia in two Godzilla films, the first in 2021, and the second in 2024.
Hottle played a teenager who lives on Skull Island with her adoptive mother and communicates with King Kong through sign language. Her performance in the second movie was nominated for the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor at the 52nd Saturn Awards.
The driver of the vehicle, a 19-year-old man from Frederick, was transported to a local hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening. Hottle was transported from the scene to an area trauma centre, where she was later pronounced dead.
Law enforcement added that the crash remains under investigation. The incident highlights the importance of road safety and the devastating consequences of excessive speed.
Friends and colleagues of Hottle have taken to social media to pay tribute to the late actress. Millie Bobby Brown, who worked with Hottle on Godzilla vs. Kong, declared herself "devastated" and wrote that she will be "deeply missed." Co-star Rebecca Hall also paid tribute, posting a series of photos of herself with Hottle on the set of the movie.
Legendary Pictures, the production company behind the Godzilla movies, published a statement on social media, reflecting on Hottle's "extraordinary heart, humanity, and light." The statement read, "We are devastated by the tragic passing of Kaylee Hottle. Through her unforgettable portrayal of Jia, Kaylee brought extraordinary heart, humanity, and light to Godzilla, Kong, and the Monsterverse."
Hottle was born in 2007 and was scouted by a casting director for the Godzilla role after appearing in an ad for a video relay service. She came from a multi-generational deaf family and was attending the Texas School for the Deaf as of 2024.
The school shared a statement following news of her death, saying, "It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news that one of our TSD seniors, Kaylee Hottle, tragically passed away yesterday in a car accident in Frederick, Maryland." The statement went on to express sympathy for Hottle's family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew and loved her.
