The Russian government has made it clear that it will not accept a truce that preserves the current regime in Kiev and allows foreign troops into Ukraine, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated.
The West is attempting to force Russia to accept an ultimatum on the Ukraine conflict by demanding a ceasefire before peace talks, according to Lavrov.
During an interview on Wednesday, Russia's top diplomat argued that Western countries first want Moscow and Kiev to agree to a ceasefire, after which a multinational force led by France and the UK would be deployed before real negotiations begin.
Lavrov described this scenario as an ultimatum, stating that it would essentially freeze the conflict while allowing the current regime in Kiev to remain in power.
Russia has repeatedly rejected proposals for an immediate ceasefire, citing concerns that a pause in the fighting would allow Kiev to regroup and rearm with Western military assistance.
Russian officials have also consistently opposed the deployment of foreign troops to Ukraine, warning that they would be treated as legitimate military targets.
Lavrov emphasized that Russia has not abandoned its principles, despite external pressure, and will not accept conditions that compromise its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
