The former mayor of a Louisiana town is on trial for allegedly having sex with a drunken 16-year-old boy — after her own children say they caught them in the act.
Misty Roberts, 43, is accused of third-degree rape over the 2024 alleged incident.
In the small town of DeRidder (population 9,800), word of the reputed tryst quickly spread, prompting the mother of the alleged victim to text the then-mayor and find out if she was pregnant.
Plan B ordered for delivery
Roberts assured the teen’s mom that she was on birth control, prosecutors told jurors last week, according to KPLC .
A screenshot of the exchange in a group chat with friends showed them urging her to take Plan B, also known as the “morning after pill.”
A DoorDash driver testified at the trial that he accepted a request from “Misty C” to purchase the emergency contraceptive and was instructed to leave it at her front door.
The driver told the court he recognized Roberts from trick-or-treating with his children at the home and later heard rumours about the allegations, which led him to connect the dots.
Her children and ex’s testimony
Roberts’ son told investigators in a March 2025 interview played for jurors that he saw his mom having sex with his friend through a crack in a window. However, he testified that he wasn’t exactly sure what he saw that night, the outlet reported.
The son also texted his mom the same night and told her that his sister was crying, according to messages presented by prosecutors.
“He is seventeen,” the son texted his mother. (Officials later confirmed the boy was 16 at the time.)
Roberts’ daughter also took the stand while prosecutors played her interview with detectives in which she said she saw her mom and the boy “on top of each other” that night.
Ex-husband said son told him
Duncan Clanton, Roberts’ ex-husband, testified Saturday that Roberts told him directly that she had sex with the minor and that the kids had caught them in the act. Clanton said his son later confirmed to him what she told him, according to KPLC .
The court saw several messages exchanged between the divorced couple, including Canton insisting that Roberts was a “great mom” and urging her to “deny what happened” if she was approached at a town council meeting.
“I can’t keep hurting others, friends and family. Lord knows I’ve done enough,” Roberts replied in one text.
During cross-examination, Clanton was asked if he agreed Roberts was a great mom, and he said, “No.”
In other texts shown in court, Roberts asked her son what kind of alcohol he and his friends wanted for the party.
Jurors also saw photos from the 2024 party, including one showing Roberts in a bikini as the teen looked up at her smiling.
Friend testifies about argument
A member of the alleged victim’s friend group also testified Saturday that Roberts was dancing on the boy and flirting with him, noting that the victim appeared drunk at the party and even vomited at one point.
After Roberts and her alleged victim came downstairs, there was a big argument, the friend added.
The disgraced mayor, who was serving her second term in office, resigned days before her arrest in 2024, according to KPLC.
She was charged with third-degree rape and contributing to the delinquency of juveniles.
This is Roberts’ second trial after the first ended in a mistrial when two Beauregard Parish judges were removed from the case because of alleged ties to her ex-husband, the outlet reported.
She was arraigned on the current charges earlier this year.
