British pioneer of AI-powered robotic harvesting, Dogtooth Technologies, has secured over £14 million in funding to deploy its fruit-picking robots on commercial farms in the UK and abroad. This significant investment marks a critical moment in the development of agricultural technology and the state of the rural labour market.
The funding is a blend of equity from multiple investors and grants from Innovate UK, with a venture leasing facility from Kineo Finance. This financial support will be used to expand commercial deployments, strengthen the company's technology platform, and accelerate the adoption of autonomous harvesting across the global horticulture sector.
The timing of the investment is crucial for Britain's rural SME economy, which faces persistent labour shortages and rising seasonal labour costs. Horticultural producers are struggling to access a reliable workforce, prompting the government to extend the seasonal farm worker scheme and invest £110 million in agricultural technology.

Dogtooth's answer to these challenges is a robot that combines computer vision, AI, and precision manipulation to navigate growing environments, identify ripe fruit, and pick delicate crops with the reliability required by large-scale commercial farming. The company has already demonstrated commercial readiness, including the recent delivery of its systems to Dyson Farming.
Dogtooth's chief executive, Duncan Robertson, believes the moment for the technology has arrived. "This investment represents a significant milestone for Dogtooth and for the broader adoption of embodied AI in agriculture," he said. "Growers are deploying our robots on commercial farms because labour shortages are a reality that cannot be ignored."
The investment also places Dogtooth at the forefront of a wider trend towards "embodied AI," which involves the application of artificial intelligence to machines that perceive and act in the physical world. Analysts predict that this market could reach $9 trillion by 2050, with agricultural robotics being one of its earliest commercially compelling applications.
Support for Dogtooth comes from investors who believe in the company's potential to transform the production of fruit and vegetable produce.
