Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer declined to comment on the recent scandal involving Rep. Ruben Gallego, stating his focus is on an upcoming speech that will criticize President Donald Trump’s address on foreign interference in the 2020 election.
Gallego, a Democratic senator from Arizona, acknowledged having sexual relationships with two Democratic House staffers who were not his direct employees while he served in the House. The relationships are believed to have occurred during his marriage, and he confirmed the partners were aides to Texas Democrats.
When questioned about the allegations, Gallego refused to discuss them, describing the inquiry as gossip. His office has not provided further comment.
The controversy adds to a series of headlines surrounding Gallego, who has been mentioned as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential race.
Earlier this year, Gallego faced scrutiny for his association with former Representative Eric Swalwell, who resigned after multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct, allegations he denies. Gallego said his close relationship with Swalwell clouded his judgment and has since distanced himself.
In response to the fallout, Gallego engaged a former deputy press secretary from the Biden administration to manage crisis communications.
A Senate Ethics Committee recently dismissed a complaint that accused Gallego of sexual misconduct and campaign‑finance violations, labeling the allegations as unfounded. Gallego characterized the dismissal as confirmation that the accusations were politically motivated conspiracies.
Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, who filed the ethics complaint, publicly called for Gallego’s resignation, describing him as a “creep” and urging accountability.
