Chelsea Urged to Replace Struggling Duo Amid £51m Transfer

Chelsea Urged to Replace Struggling Duo Amid £51m Transfer

The new Chelsea manager, Xabi Alonso, is set to make significant changes to the team's roster. In addition to signing Italy international Marco Palestra in a £47 million deal, Alonso plans to bring in a new left-back to replace the departed Marc Cucurella.

Furthermore, Alonso intends to sign a new goalkeeper, as he does not believe current goalkeepers Robert Sanchez or Kepa Jorgensen are at the level required for a side he aims to turn into title contenders. Sanchez kept his place in the Chelsea team last season despite some high-profile mistakes, while Jorgensen has informed Chelsea of his desire to leave this summer.

According to sources, Alonso has requested Chelsea approach Porto for their 26-year-old captain and Portugal No. 1, Diogo Costa. Alonso reportedly "admired" Costa before the World Cup, and his solid performances for Portugal only increased his desire to welcome him to Chelsea.

However, Porto are unlikely to accept a lower fee for Costa, given his strong showing at the World Cup and interest from other top clubs. Costa has a release clause worth 61 million euros (£51m), but Chelsea are only willing to pay 40 million euros (£34m).

Alonso will face a challenge in prising Costa away from Porto, particularly considering Chelsea's current offer. The new manager will need to convince the Portuguese giants to lower their asking price if he hopes to secure Costa's signature.

At his Stamford Bridge unveiling, Alonso expressed his excitement for the role, stating that Chelsea have "great potential" despite their struggles last season. He sees the club as a strong base to build upon, with a strong bond between the players and supporters.
