Inter Milan Chairman Criticizes £47m Chelsea Deal After Reneging

Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta expressed disapproval over the club's recent departure of defender Marco Palestra to Chelsea, describing the move as a lifestyle choice rather than a strategic decision.

Inter had already agreed on a transfer with Atalanta and Palestra had verbally committed to return to the San Siro. The player’s sudden reversal to join Chelsea disrupted those plans.

Marotta cited the growing influence of agents in modern football, arguing that they can create situations that disproportionately affect clubs. He said the agent’s guidance was a key factor in Palestra’s decision.

The Inter chief also highlighted the need for tighter cost control, noting that some players, even when free, command salaries that exceed the club’s budgetary limits.

Chelsea’s new manager welcomed the acquisition, praising Palestra’s versatility and competitive mentality. He emphasized the defender’s ability to operate on the left side of both a back‑four and a back‑five formation.

The club plans to work on Palestra’s adaptation to the Premier League, ensuring he integrates smoothly into the squad’s tactical setup.
