American camper found dead in execution‑style shooting

Tyler Wilkin, a 35‑year‑old originally from Ohio, was found dead on a remote beach in Puerto Rico earlier this month.

Investigators determined he died from a single gunshot wound to the back of the head, a manner described as execution‑style. His body was recovered in the mangroves at Playa La Selva near Luquillo on July 10.

Wilkin had relocated to Puerto Rico in 2024 and was camping alone at the secluded shoreline when the incident occurred.

Text messages sent from the campsite reveal he heard unsettling noises, describing them as eerie howling and distant fireworks. Subsequent messages referenced a recurring “howler” that was “getting rowdy.”

Local authorities are conducting an investigation, and Wilkin’s family has engaged a private investigator to assist in uncovering the circumstances surrounding his death.

Born in Wilmington, Ohio, Wilkin is survived by his parents and four siblings. He was known for his love of outdoor activities such as tennis, hiking, and rock climbing.

Friends described him as an intelligent and promising individual whose life was cut short.
