PSEi falls as investors profit‑take amid rising Gulf tensions

The Philippine Stock Exchange index closed lower on Tuesday, ending a four‑day rally as investors secured gains.

The benchmark index slipped 1.27% to 6,333.80, while the all‑shares index fell 0.32% to 3,439.58.

After opening at 6,461.34, the PSEi reached an intraday high of 6,488.35 before settling at its session low.

Market participants cited the peso’s depreciation and rising fuel costs as factors dampening sentiment.

The Philippine peso finished at 61.745 per dollar, a 5.90‑centavo decline, and touched a record low of 61.75 intraday.

Global oil price increases, driven by Middle‑East tensions, are expected to raise diesel and kerosene prices by more than 10 pesos per liter this week.

Despite the surge, oil prices fell over 1% on Tuesday amid diplomatic efforts to ease tensions between the United States and Iran.

Most sector indices closed in the red. Services dropped 2.49% to 3,481.36; financials fell 1.1% to 1,912.87; holding firms slipped 0.82% to 4,415.66; property declined 0.48% to 1,917.82.

Mining and oil rose 3.51% to 15,709.20, while industrials increased 1.26% to 8,437.59.

Decliners outnumbered advancers, with 107 companies down versus 91 up; 52 remained unchanged.

Trading volume rose to 702.8 million shares, valuing 7.94 billion pesos, up from Monday’s 538.96 million shares and 6.75 billion pesos.

Net foreign selling totaled 312.45 million pesos, reversing the 640.40 million pesos of net buying recorded the previous day.

Analysts view the pullback as a healthy correction after the market approached overbought levels.
