New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced that she will not provide the list of more than 6,600 individuals registered to vote who are not U.S. citizens. The decision follows a claim of a “serious software error” in the state’s Motor Vehicle System that allegedly allowed foreign nationals to register between June 2023 and June 2024.
Sherrill stated that the error had a “minor” impact, noting that fewer than 400 of the affected voters participated in recent elections. She added that the registrations were spread across party lines and throughout the state.
During a press briefing in Trenton, the governor reiterated that the information would not be released to the federal administration. She cited concerns about protecting private data and criticized what she described as a politicization of the government.
The software vendor responsible for the system, IDEMIA, disputed the governor’s explanation. The company claimed that the records were entered correctly according to state specifications and that all 6,600 individuals had indicated they were not U.S. citizens during registration.
IDEMIA also emphasized that no noncitizen was ever marked as a citizen in the database and that the data was available to the state at the time of registration.
