Canada Cancels Cross-Border Bridge Celebration Amid Tensions

Canada Cancels Cross-Border Bridge Celebration Amid Tensions

The long-awaited Gordie Howe International Bridge is poised to open next week, despite facing multiple setbacks in recent months.

The multibillion-dollar project has navigated turbulent waters, with strained relations between the United States and Canada contributing to its delays.

The bridge's opening was initially put in jeopardy in February after a threat from a high-profile figure, who accused Canada of unfair trade practices and criticized its relationship with China.

However, a deal reached earlier this month on tolls cleared the way for the bridge to open, paving the way for the long-awaited ceremony.

The new bridge is expected to ease traffic on the privately owned Ambassador Bridge, the largest commercial border crossing between the two countries, which connects Detroit and Windsor.

The port of entry handled a staggering $126 billion in trade carried by commercial trucks in 2023, highlighting the need for improved infrastructure in the region.
