Former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao returned to the United States after a scheduled trip to China, following her husband Senator Mitch McConnell’s hospitalization on June 14.
Chao’s statement clarified that the trip was planned well in advance to support her family’s philanthropic work and that it began on June 12, just two days before her husband was admitted to the hospital.
The statement noted that the senator’s condition did not require her to cut the trip short, and that he was receiving medical attention at the time of his admission.

Chao also expressed gratitude for the support the senator has received during his recovery and reiterated that no new details about his health were provided.
McConnell, 84, has remained hospitalized for an extended period, raising questions about his capacity to fulfill his leadership duties.
