During a recent rally in Georgia, the president publicly criticized Thune, demanding that the Senate leader move the bill forward in time for the upcoming August recess.
Trump described the Senate as a place where legislation is often sent to die, noting that the act has already been passed by Congress three times without success.
Leavitt highlighted the president’s emphasis on voter ID and proof of citizenship, stating that the public strongly supports these measures.
She underscored that the electorate elected Republican leadership across the White House, House, and Senate, and expects the Senate to fulfill its responsibilities.
Thune replied by suggesting that Republicans should focus on securing votes rather than blaming opposition, implying that some senators may be persuadable.
Previously, Trump has criticized Thune for a perceived soft approach, but has shifted his focus to address Senate Republicans as a collective group.
