Italian Authorities Sought to Protect Lee Gilley from Alleged

The extradition of Italian national Luca Mariani, accused of murdering his girlfriend Christa Gail Pike in Texas, remains uncertain as Italian authorities await further assurances from the U.S. government. Mariani's defense team has raised concerns about the possibility of the death penalty, citing a lack of a formal guarantee from Texas authorities.

According to court records, the Turin court has temporarily blocked the extradition request and sought additional assurances regarding the death penalty and a possible sentence of life without parole. The court has set an August 31 deadline for a response and scheduled another hearing for early September.

The defense team has also raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Christa Gail Pike's death. They claim that she suffered from a blood disorder and that blood found in the couple's bedroom was inconsistent with the prosecution's account of her death.

A decision on Mariani's extradition is still pending as the Italian authorities await further clarification from the U.S. government. The case continues to be closely watched as Mariani's fate hangs in the balance.
