German officials investigate release of Berlin attack suspect

German officials investigate release of Berlin attack suspect

Berlin was rocked on Saturday night when a vehicle was driven into a crowd near a pride festival, followed by a machete assault that left one person dead and 29 injured.

The 21‑year‑old suspect, Abdul Ballout, was a German citizen who had previously traveled to Lebanon with the intention of joining the Islamic State in Syria.

Ballout had been convicted earlier this year of preparing a serious act of violence against the state and of publishing propaganda supporting the Islamic State. The juvenile court sentenced him to one year and ten months in youth custody, but the sentence was suspended and an arrest warrant was lifted while the case was appealed.

During the attack, Ballout reportedly used a bladed weapon against special forces officers, who responded with firearms. He suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged that measures be taken to protect the public from criminals who might escape custody, while Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said it was unreasonable that a person with Ballout’s record was free to roam.

Mayor Kai Wegner expressed deep concern over the incident, stating that the words fail him when considering the circumstances that allowed the attack to occur.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to understand how a convicted individual with a suspended sentence could evade monitoring and carry out a terror attack.
