New Jersey Abandons Flag Honoring Directive Following Sherrill

New Jersey Abandons Flag Honoring Directive Following Sherrill

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has come under fire after the state's flag status records showed flags at full-staff despite a White House proclamation directing U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff nationwide in remembrance of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

New Jersey state Sen. Joe Pennacchio, R-Boonton, formally requested the governor lower the flags earlier this week after Graham's death. However, as of midday Thursday, the Trenton flags at the Capitol remained at full-staff, and a New Jersey Department of State website tracking flag status also indicated "all flags full-staff" on Thursday.

This move has sparked criticism from Pennacchio, who described the governor's administration as "the most political" in his 25 years of service. Pennacchio noted that Graham was a respected public figure and a bipartisan leader, and he believes that honoring him should be a nonpartisan effort. He also highlighted that Sherrill is a veteran, just like Graham.

Pennacchio's request was not the only one; neighboring Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro both ordered flags lowered, along with leaders of California, Colorado, Maryland, New York, and Virginia. However, New Jersey's official flag status remained "full-staff" as of Thursday, alongside that of New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger.

Pennacchio emphasized that honoring people like Graham should be a moment for the nation to come together and put politics aside. He recalled Graham's words on the importance of considering nominees based on their qualifications, regardless of party. Pennacchio also expressed his appreciation for Sen. Cory Booker's video honoring Graham, despite the two senators having different party affiliations.

Another New Jersey figure who spoke out after Graham's passing was Rep. Christopher Smith, a Republican representing the Jersey Shore and the Garden State's longest-serving congressman. He praised Graham as "an indefatigable and courageous fighter for the right to life, human rights, liberty and freedom."
