Platner's replacement sparks widespread online reaction

Platner's replacement sparks widespread online reaction

Maine Democratic Senate candidate Troy Jackson faced criticism after a report revealed he fathered two children with his second cousin, Lana Pelletier, a relationship that is legal but uncommon in the region.

The report indicated that Jackson and Pelletier, who share the same great‑grandparents, have two adult sons. While the relationship is not illegal, it sparked a wave of commentary from Republican officials and commentators, who described the situation as indicative of broader candidate selection issues.

Several Republican members of Congress and party strategists publicly questioned the Democratic Party’s vetting process, labeling the personal matter as a distraction from policy debates.

The Jackson campaign dismissed the focus on his family, asserting that attacks are intended to divert attention from Senator Susan Collins’ voting record, which aligns closely with former President Trump.

Jackson, a former state senator who previously sought the Democratic nomination for governor, was selected as the party’s Senate nominee after the original candidate, Graham Platner, withdrew following a rape allegation that he denied.

The upcoming general election on Nov. 3 will pit Jackson against incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins as both parties vie for control of the Senate.
