AI System Detects and Blocks Phone Scams Aimed at Canadians

Ottawa — A new AI-powered technology aimed at safeguarding Canadians from scam phone calls is set to be implemented. Bell has announced the deployment of a system that identifies and flags phone calls using spoofed caller ID, a tactic often employed by scammers to deceive their victims.

The technology, powered by a cutting-edge AI detection model, enhances traditional spam and fraud detection by identifying suspicious spoofing activity. According to a statement from Bell Canada, this added layer of protection will safeguard customers from scams.

Bell Canada's Steve Karan emphasized the company's efforts to counter the increasing sophistication of telephone scammers. Detection systems have already helped protect customers from hundreds of millions of spam calls.

With the new AI model, Bell aims to catch and flag spoofed calls in real time, further bolstering protection for Canadians. This advancement will enable individuals to answer calls with greater confidence, knowing they are being safeguarded from potential scams.

Spoofing caller ID is not a new issue; scammers have been relying on this tactic for years to impersonate trusted institutions or mimic local phone numbers. Bell's suspicious call detection system has analyzed over 4.4 billion phone calls in 2025, blocking and/or flagging over 540 million suspicious calls.

The new AI-powered service will be available exclusively to mobile phone customers of Bell Canada or services that utilize Bell networks, including Virgin Plus, Lucky Mobile, PC Mobile, No Name Mobile, and Maxi mobile services.
