A 13‑year‑old girl from Texas is recovering after a barracuda bite sustained while vacationing in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The teenager was swimming in shallow water on July 19 when a barracuda bit her hand. A shiny bracelet on her wrist likely reflected sunlight, prompting the fish to mistake her for prey. The attack lacerated four tendons, a nerve and a ligament, necessitating surgery.
Medical professionals noted that the injuries could have resulted in the loss of her hand or fingers. The surgery was performed three days after the incident.
Witnesses said the teen was performing handstands on the white sand when the fish was attracted to the reflective jewelry, likening the effect to a “disco ball” in the bright sun.
Family photographs showed the hand covered in cuts and puncture wounds before a cast was applied to support healing.
The girl recalled feeling sudden pressure, seeing her hand bleed, and spotting a large silver tail, which terrified her.
A nurse who was in the water nearby responded quickly, applying a tourniquet to control bleeding while the mother tended to the situation.
The mother expressed fear over the amount of blood loss and the possibility of permanent damage, but remained focused on keeping her daughter calm.
