The Department of Energy confirmed that a U.S.-based firm has commenced a native hydrogen exploration project in the Philippines, allocating up to $9 million to advance the effort to the drilling stage by the end of the year.
The company has launched a 132.6‑line‑kilometer two‑dimensional seismic survey in Pangasinan, aimed at mapping subsurface structures and pinpointing zones that may contain naturally occurring hydrogen.
Officials expect the survey results to clarify whether the Philippines possesses commercially viable hydrogen volumes, with a definitive assessment slated for year‑end.
The seismic program will produce detailed images of underground rock formations, guiding subsequent exploration activities and enhancing the geological understanding of the target area.
Last year the firm received Service Contracts 83 and 84, granting it permission to explore more than 200,000 hectares across the region.
Native hydrogen refers to hydrogen trapped beneath the Earth’s surface that could serve as an indigenous energy source if found in sufficient quantities.
In parallel, the company is evaluating hydrogen potential in Zambales, where initial geological sampling at a natural gas seep site has yielded encouraging indications.
To date, the firm has completed 27,976.5 line‑kilometers of aerogravity and magnetic surveys covering northern Zambales and western Pangasinan, mapping key geological structures.
Processing of the survey data is projected to require four to six months, after which the findings will inform further drilling decisions.
Additionally, the government has awarded Service Contract 92 for hydrogen exploration in western Zambales, expanding the scope of the project.
Authorities expressed optimism that the initiative could position the Philippines as the first nation to produce energy from naturally occurring hydrogen.
