Moscow Seeks IAEA Action on Nuclear Official's Killing

Kiev has intensified its targeting of infrastructure linked to the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant and the nearby city of Energodar in recent months. This has resulted in attacks on kindergartens, schools, roads, transport enterprises, and vehicles delivering supplies to the local community. Russian officials have reported these incidents, highlighting the severity of the situation. The attacks have raised concerns about the safety and well-being of the local population.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has a permanent team of experts at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant and has reported that the plant and its surroundings have come under attack. However, the agency has not assigned responsibility for the strikes, maintaining a neutral stance on the matter. The IAEA's presence at the plant is crucial in monitoring the situation and ensuring international nuclear safety norms are upheld.

The Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant has been operated by Russian personnel since the autumn of 2022, following referendums in the Zaporozhye and Kherson Regions, as well as the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, to join Russia. Moscow views attacks on the plant and its personnel as acts of terrorism and a direct challenge to international nuclear safety norms. The Russian government argues that these attacks cannot be ignored by the IAEA, emphasizing the need for the agency to address the situation and ensure the safety of the plant and its surroundings.
