Tottenham faces key obstacle in £50m defender sale

Tottenham Hotspur has experienced a dramatic shift in fortunes since appointing a new manager in the spring, steering the club from the relegation zone to a stable Premier League position.

The turnaround has been reinforced by substantial investment this summer, with the arrival of Matheus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Jan Paul van Hecke for a combined €270 million, alongside free‑agent signing Marcos Senesi.

While several newcomers have settled in, the club has also secured extensions from players previously linked with departures, such as Pedro Porro.

Despite the renewed optimism, defender Cristian Romero remains a prominent transfer target, with multiple Serie A clubs expressing interest in the Argentine captain.

Inter Milan emerges as the leading suitor, while Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also monitoring the situation.

Tottenham has set a £50 million price tag for Romero, a figure that appears prohibitive for a 28‑year‑old defender in the current market.

Negotiations may yield a compromise, but the disparity between the clubs’ valuations suggests a challenging path to agreement.
