College Athletes Develop Skills Beyond Sports

College Athletes Develop Skills Beyond Sports

The Philippines has a long history of producing elite athletes in various sports, despite being renowned for its love of basketball. From an eight-division world champion to two Olympic gold medalists and a world champion in pool, Filipino athletes have consistently demonstrated the nation's sporting excellence extends far beyond its favorite pastime.

Behind many of these success stories is the underlying necessity that prevails throughout Philippine sport: the need for sustained support. Potential may be abundant across the country, but it often goes unfulfilled without access to quality coaching, training facilities, equipment, and competitive opportunities, leaving even the most promising athletes to struggle.

Private sector support has become increasingly crucial in filling this void. Among those who have invested deeply in Philippine sports is businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan, known as MVP.

MVP has been a staunch advocate of basketball, founding the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) in 2007, serving as its inaugural president for two terms, and currently holding the title of Chairman Emeritus. He is also a well-known benefactor of the country's national basketball team, Gilas Pilipinas, and was elected to the Central Board of FIBA, the worldwide governing body for the sport of basketball.

Through his conglomerates, MVP operates three competitive franchises in the Philippine Basketball Association and sponsors teams in the Premier Volleyball League. However, his greatest contribution to Philippine sports arguably lies outside of the sporting limelight.

Through the MVP Sports Foundation (MVPSF), MVP has embraced a philosophy of developing world-class Filipino sports champions while promoting a culture of excellence through sports. The foundation focuses on investing in the systems that help produce future champions, supporting National Sports Associations (NSAs), grassroots initiatives, and elite athletes across a wide range of disciplines.

The foundation's long-term approach recognizes that success on the international stage is a result of consistent training, proper coaching, sports science, quality equipment, and opportunities to compete abroad. Without sustained support, even the country's brightest prospects can dim out and struggle to reach their full potential.

The MVPSF has become one of the country's strongest private partners for Philippine sports, supporting disciplines such as weightlifting, gymnastics, boxing, badminton, judo, esports, and many others. One athlete who continues to benefit from the foundation's commitment is two-time Olympian Elreen Ando.

Ando received continued backing from the MVPSF as she begins her journey toward qualifying for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Her schedule includes the IWF World Weightlifting Championships in Ningbo, China, and the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, where she will face the continent's best lifters.

The MVPSF's efforts are equally evident in its partnerships with NSAs. The foundation formalized a Memorandum of Agreement with the Philippine Judo Federation, committing to strengthening one of the world's most widely practiced Olympic sports.

The partnership covers grassroots development, athlete preparation, and long-term programs designed to produce future national team members. It reflects the foundation's belief that sustainable success begins by creating opportunities for young athletes long before they wear the Philippine colors in international tournaments.

The foundation also recognizes that supporting Philippine sports means bringing fans closer to the athletes who represent the country. On July 6, as part of MVP's 80th birthday celebration, the MVPSF joined the Philippine Sports Commission and several private sector partners in organizing a free public watch party at PhilSports Arena.

The event allowed fans to cheer for Gilas Pilipinas during the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers before shifting their attention to tennis sensation Alexandra Eala, who took center stage in her Wimbledon Round of 16 match against Jasmine Paolini.

While championships in professional leagues are celebrated for a season, investments in grassroots programs, athlete development, and NSAs can shape Philippine sports for generations. As the Philippines continues its pursuit of worldwide recognition across multiple sports, the foundation's commitment serves as a reminder that the country's next Olympic medalist, world champion, or international star may emerge from any discipline.

The future of Philippine sports looks brighter than ever in search of its next MVP, thanks to sustained support, strategic partnerships, and continued investment in grassroots development.
