A senator called on the legislative chamber Wednesday to launch an inquiry into the agriculture sector’s readiness for the El Niño weather pattern, which meteorological forecasts project will continue through 2027.
Under Senate Resolution No. 515, dated July 14, Senator Francis Pancratius “Kiko” N. Pangilinan seeks a comprehensive assessment of the budget, planning and government interventions required to address the anticipated impacts.
The resolution warns that insufficient preparation could result in a loss of up to 700,000 metric tons of rice and cause widespread irrigation disruptions across the country.
It stresses the need to verify whether existing government plans, allocated funds and targeted actions are adequate, properly focused, and ready for immediate implementation before the El Niño intensifies.
In a press statement, the senator urged authorities to develop long‑term strategies that can mitigate the recurring climate challenge and safeguard agricultural productivity.
The proposed inquiry will examine the preparedness of key agencies, including the Department of Agriculture, the National Irrigation Administration, the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation, and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
