President Donald Trump addressed the nation Thursday evening on the state of U.S. elections, declaring a sweeping declassification of intelligence that he described as exposing "shocking vulnerabilities" tied to hacking, exploitation, and foreign interference.
The president said the material had been "covered up and hidden" from the public for years and asserted that the disclosure marks a turning point in government transparency.
Documents were released during the speech through the White House, outlining findings compiled by the Government Transparency Taskforce and the President's Intelligence Advisory Board, with review by senior intelligence officials.
The released records focus on four areas: alleged weaknesses in electronic voting and ballot-counting systems, China's acquisition of American voter data, a Michigan voter-registration investigation, and noncitizens appearing on state voter rolls.
According to the address, China obtained names, addresses, phone numbers, political affiliations, and other personal details to build a unit focused on exploiting that data.
Trump claimed reports from intelligence agencies on Chinese interference were excluded from his daily briefings and withheld from Congress. He cited an analyst email stating information had been "deliberately massaged" to suppress details of foreign election activity.
The president directed the director of national intelligence, the Department of Justice, the FBI, and intelligence agencies to open investigations and, where warranted, pursue removals and criminal charges.
The speech follows a broader administration push on executive orders and legislation aimed at securing elections and reducing foreign influence in the democratic process.
