Trump-Backed SAVE America Act Gains Conservative Momentum

Trump-Backed SAVE America Act Gains Conservative Momentum

The President's call for election reform has sparked a strong response from lawmakers and conservative groups, with many rallying around the proposed Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act.

Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., quickly expressed his support for the bill, stating that it is crucial for preserving the integrity of American elections. "We are going to lose our country if we don’t pass the dadgum SAVE America Act," he wrote on social media. "Call your senator and tell them to save our great nation."

The President has promised to release critical intelligence revealing vulnerabilities in the US election infrastructure, including foreign data theft carried out by China and evidence of "election fraud." He called on lawmakers to pass the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship to participate in federal elections.

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, echoed the President's calls, stating that it is essential to "crush foreign election interference" and pass the SAVE America Act. Hans Von Spakovsky, an election expert, agreed that the SAVE Act is necessary to implement universal voter ID and proof of citizenship.

The legislation has been stopped by Democratic opposition in the Senate, where Republicans need at least 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. However, some Republicans have demanded that the Senate revisit the rule, arguing that it is hindering the passage of crucial legislation.

Democrats have condemned the SAVE Act, claiming that it would add too many hurdles for minorities and other demographics to participate in elections. Former Vice President Kamala Harris stated that the bill is "part of a larger agenda of conservatives trying to steal power from the people."

Rep. Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., echoed Harris' calls, stating that the SAVE Act is an attempt to "rig this year’s election" and make it harder to vote for millions of Americans. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., also joined in the chorus of Democratic condemnations, stating that the SAVE Act is "going NOWHERE in the Senate."

The fate of the SAVE Act remains uncertain, but the debate surrounding election reform continues to intensify.
