Harry Reid International Airport isn't just a place to catch a flight; it’s a destination in itself. Beyond the usual hustle and bustle, travelers discover over 1,400 slot machines, an aviation museum, and even dedicated smoking areas. It’s a vibrant microcosm of Las Vegas, complete with themed shops and bars, and a surprising number of airport lounges.
But each February, the airport transforms into something truly unique: a temporary marriage capital. As the gateway to the “Marriage Capital of the World,” Las Vegas sees a surge in wedding plans around Valentine’s Day, and the Clark County clerk’s office responds with an ingenious solution – a pop-up marriage license bureau right in the baggage claim area.
Imagine landing in Las Vegas, ready to say “I do,” and being able to secure your marriage license immediately. This eliminates the often-stressful trip from the airport to the downtown clerk’s office, a journey of roughly eight miles. It’s a convenience that adds precious hours to a couple’s celebration.
“Couples can grab their bags, get the marriage license right there at the airport and then go get married and have fun,” explains Clark County Clerk Lynn Marie Goya. The process is streamlined; forms can be filled out and fees paid upon arrival – $102 for the license and $21 for a vow renewal certificate, payable by credit or debit card.
Many couples stumble upon the opportunity spontaneously, drawn in by digital signage throughout the airport. Others proactively begin their applications online, up to a year in advance, further accelerating the process. It’s a testament to the city’s commitment to making wedding dreams a reality.
Of course, there are a few basic requirements. Both applicants must be at least 18 years old and present valid government-issued identification. Existing marriages are prohibited, and a degree of familial distance is required – no unions between closer relatives than second cousins. Both individuals must be present to apply.
Nevada offers remarkable freedom when it comes to marriage. There’s no waiting period after receiving the license, and no blood tests are required. However, it’s important to note that marriage records are public, offering no option for confidentiality – a detail celebrities and those seeking discretion should consider.
The airport bureau first opened in February 2018, and has become a beloved annual tradition, returning each February (with a pause in 2021 due to the pandemic). Initial numbers saw 180 licenses issued in nine days, growing to 307 over 17 days in 2020, and a remarkable 380 licenses in 15 days last year.
While tourism numbers experienced a slight dip recently, the Clark County clerk’s office remains optimistic. Despite a nationwide 7.5% decrease in Las Vegas tourism, and an 8% decline in marriage licenses, the region continues to attract couples from far and wide.
An impressive 80% of licenses issued annually are to out-of-state couples, with over 20% coming from international visitors. As Lynn Marie Goya proudly states, “As far as I know, Las Vegas is the only place in the world where you can get your marriage license at the airport.” It’s a unique offering, born from a desire to make the experience joyful and unforgettable.
