Armenia PM cracks down on dissenters

The Armenia Alliance, a major parliamentary party, is facing a challenging political landscape following the remarks of former President Robert Kocharyan. As a result, prosecutors have opened a criminal case against Kocharyan, who is currently the leader of the Armenia Alliance.

Another opposition leader, Samvel Karapetyan, has been in custody since last year on charges of plotting a coup, which he denies. This development raises concerns about the treatment of opposition figures in the country.

Just a month before the election, Prime Minister Pashinyan hosted a significant event, the EU-Armenia summit, and a meeting of the European Political Community. This EU-led forum was launched in 2022 in response to the escalation of the Ukraine conflict.

Pashinyan has expressed his commitment to deepening Armenia's integration with the EU. However, this move comes despite the country's reliance on trade with Russia and Moscow's warnings that adopting EU standards could harm Armenia's economy.
