SCIENCE FEST CHAOS: Kids Programme SCRAMBLES After Venue BREAKDOWN!

A beloved Edinburgh tradition has undergone a shift this year. The annual Science Festival, a cornerstone of the city’s Easter holidays, is adapting to an unexpected challenge.

A critical lift malfunction at the City Art Centre, a long-standing festival hub, has prompted organizers to relocate a significant portion of the program. Accessibility is paramount, and with the lift out of service, the venue couldn’t meet necessary standards.

Fortunately, the National Museum of Scotland on Chambers Street has stepped forward to accommodate a wealth of events. This includes captivating presentations like “Giants,” exploring the creatures that roamed after the dinosaurs, and interactive experiences like “Hands-On DNA.”

The change impacts a diverse range of offerings, from thought-provoking discussions like “Future Voices: The AI Ethics Podcast” to engaging children’s workshops and stunning art installations. Experts’ talks and technical presentations have also found a new home.

City officials acknowledge the disruption and are actively working towards a solution. Plans are underway to install a new lift and repair existing escalators at the City Art Centre, aiming for full accessibility in time for summer exhibitions.

Discussions are also focusing on long-term improvements, with potential funding from the Edinburgh Visitor Levy earmarked for enhancing accessibility and inclusivity at the City Art Centre.

Despite the venue change, the Science Festival remains optimistic. Organizers express delight at the opportunity to showcase popular workshops like “Dig Up a Dinosaur” and “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” at the National Museum.

The festival’s reach extends beyond these two locations, with events also planned for the Botanical Gardens, Portobello Promenade, Panmure House, Edinburgh Zoo, and even within the historic City Chambers.

Founded in 1989, the Edinburgh Science Festival pioneered the concept of a dedicated science festival and has grown to become the largest of its kind in the UK. It continues to inspire and educate with a dynamic program spanning exhibitions, performances, and debates.

For two weeks each April, the festival transforms Edinburgh into a vibrant hub of scientific exploration, offering something for every age and curiosity. This year’s event runs from April 4th to 19th, promising a captivating experience despite the logistical adjustments.

The festival tackles complex subjects – from the mysteries of quantum physics to pressing environmental concerns – all while fostering a sense of wonder and discovery.
