What investigators uncovered was far more sinister than isolated acts of cruelty. Lima and Kabecz had established a clandestine network, a horrifying initiation rite demanding new members submit videos of their own animal killings to gain entry.
Between May and October 2024, over 75 animals were subjected to unspeakable acts – tortured, crushed, and deliberately killed. The sheer volume of evidence, gleaned from seized electronic devices and thousands of encrypted communications, painted a picture of calculated depravity.
The investigation, codenamed Project Artemis, quickly expanded beyond Canadian borders, reaching into multiple countries. Law enforcement agencies worldwide launched parallel investigations, recognizing the gravity and potential reach of this disturbing network.
But the horror didn’t end with animal cruelty. Investigators also discovered images of child pornography on devices belonging to the pair, leading to further arrests and charges including accessing and possessing such material.
The Winnipeg Humane Society, deeply affected by the case, highlighted the ripple effect of animal cruelty. The trauma extended beyond the victims to rescuers, pet owners, and the entire community, shattering the belief in a compassionate world.
