A wave of relief washed over a community in County Armagh yesterday as news broke of a school bus crash in Belleeks, but quickly turned to concern for those involved.
The incident, occurring on the Tullyah Road, involved a double-decker bus carrying approximately forty students from St Paul’s High School. Dramatic images from the scene showed the bus on its side, emergency responders working swiftly to secure the area and assist those on board.
Thankfully, every child aboard was able to exit the vehicle safely, a fact that resonated deeply with local Assembly member Justin McNulty, who expressed immense gratitude that the outcome wasn’t far more tragic.
Despite escaping physical harm, the principal of St Paul’s High School, Dáithí Murray, acknowledged the “significant shock” experienced by the pupils. The journey had been from the school towards Whitecross when the crash occurred.
Emergency services responded with significant force, dispatching at least five ambulances, advanced paramedics, and an ambulance doctor to the rural location. Their rapid response was crucial in ensuring the immediate well-being of the students.
Authorities immediately closed the B134 Tullyah Road in both directions, advising motorists to seek alternative routes while investigations commenced. The road remained closed as of late yesterday.
School officials have encouraged students to attend classes today if they feel up to it, and have assured parents that support services will be readily available to help them process the unsettling experience.
The community mourns the worry and fear felt by parents and the emotional impact on the young passengers, grateful that a potentially devastating situation ended with everyone safe.
A dedicated and experienced member of the school team was also remembered during this difficult time, with thoughts and condolences extended to their family, friends, and colleagues.
