The atmosphere in the Capitol was electric, charged with anticipation and simmering tension. But for Stephen A. Smith, a prominent voice in American media, the unfolding State of the Union address wasn’t a display of political theater – it was a masterclass in manipulation, and he believed Democrats walked directly into the trap.
Smith didn’t mince words, describing how President Trump “played” the Democrats, expertly baiting reactions that overshadowed any potential message. He specifically pointed to the heckling and dramatic walkouts as evidence of a calculated response, a predictable pattern he found deeply frustrating.
A pivotal moment, according to Smith, was Trump’s call for the audience to stand in support of “Americans” – a seemingly innocuous phrase that carried immense weight. He argued Trump deliberately framed the appeal to highlight a perceived weakness, knowing the optics would be powerful and resonate with voters.
The refusal of some Democrats to rise, Smith asserted, wasn’t a statement of principle, but a strategic misstep. He believed it inadvertently reinforced a narrative that fueled the previous election’s outcome, a critical error in judgment with lasting consequences.
Smith’s critique extended beyond the immediate spectacle, questioning the Democrats’ ability to govern effectively. He wondered how voters could trust a party seemingly consumed by reactive outbursts, citing instances like pointed interruptions during the President’s speech as proof of dysfunction.
While acknowledging Trump’s own flaws – labeling his economic policies as “blind” – Smith insisted the greater failure lay with the opposition. He argued Democrats were too focused on responding to Trump’s provocations, missing opportunities to capitalize on his setbacks in other areas, like Supreme Court rulings.

Smith even suggested the events at the State of the Union cooled his own hypothetical ambitions. He’d previously hinted at a potential presidential run in 2028, but now doubted his ability to navigate the political landscape without resorting to harsh criticism, even of his own party.
Ironically, Trump himself had previously encouraged Smith to run, praising his “great entertainment skills.” This acknowledgment, however, didn’t soften Smith’s assessment of the current political climate or his disappointment with the Democratic response.
Despite generally aligning with Democratic ideals, Smith identifies as fiscally conservative and has, at times, expressed a surprising respect for Trump’s leadership. He believes the current Democratic party lacks a clear, decisive leader, a void that contributes to the cycle of reactive politics he so vehemently condemns.
