Parasitic infection triggers severe stomach illness in thousands

In 28 states, including Ohio, new cases of a parasitic infection have been reported along the Michigan border. The rise in infections was first noted in mid‑June and has since accelerated.

Michigan now records more than 1,200 confirmed cases and at least 40 hospitalizations. Ohio reports over 500 cases, with 306 confirmed in Lucas County alone. Texas has documented at least 48 cases, and other states are experiencing outbreaks.

The infection typically presents with watery, often explosive diarrhea that can persist for weeks or months without treatment. Additional symptoms include severe abdominal cramping, bloating, nausea, fatigue, and significant weight loss.

The parasite’s official outbreak season runs from May 1 through August 31, a period when warmer temperatures correlate with increased infections.

Health officials advise anyone experiencing symptoms to seek medical evaluation for testing and treatment.

Investigations are underway across multiple states, but the source of the spread remains unidentified.

Previous outbreaks have been linked to contaminated fruits or vegetables and exposure to polluted irrigation water. Thorough washing of fresh produce is recommended, although it may not eliminate all risk.

Local guidance in Michigan suggests buying whole heads of lettuce or salad mixes rather than pre‑washed, bagged varieties. Removing the outer leaves before washing and cooking vegetables when possible can reduce exposure.
