The trial of OnlyFans model Courtney Clenney is set to take a dramatic turn as her lawyers seek to block prosecutors from using prior violent incidents to portray her as the aggressor. If convicted, Clenney could face up to 15 years in prison for the 2022 death of her boyfriend, Christian Obumseli.
Clenney's lawyers have filed a motion requesting that a Miami-Dade judge allow them to bring up Obumseli's 2020 arrest warrant if the state describes him as peaceful, gentle, or nonviolent. The defense claims that Obumseli's history of violent behavior, including the alleged mistreatment of his dog, Halo, is crucial to understanding the couple's volatile relationship.
A 2020 arrest warrant in Travis County, Texas, accused Obumseli of cruelty to a nonlivestock animal, a Class A misdemeanor. The warrant alleges that apartment staff found Obumseli's dead dog, Halo, confined to a kennel in a closet after the apartment had been abandoned. Investigators concluded that the dog's most likely cause of death was dehydration from water deprivation, and that Obumseli had given conflicting accounts about the dog's death.
The defense is also challenging prosecutors' use of a February 2022 elevator video, which they claim shows Clenney striking Obumseli and pulling his hair. However, Clenney's lawyers argue that the prosecution has selectively edited the video to present a misleading narrative. They claim that earlier footage shows Clenney entering the elevator partially clothed and barefoot, and that Obumseli later entered the elevator and wiped away Clenney's blood before attempting to gain access to the apartment.
Clenney's lawyers argue that their client acted in self-defense and as a battered spouse, and that the prosecution's portrayal of her as the aggressor is misleading. The defense is seeking to have the state's use of the prior violent incidents and the edited elevator video blocked from evidence at trial.
Clenney was arrested four months after the incident and charged with second-degree murder. She has pleaded not guilty and is currently awaiting trial. The case has garnered significant media attention due to the high-profile nature of the defendant and the alleged brutality of the crime.
