After delivering a speech outside No 10 Downing Street, Andy Burnham turned to invite someone from the crowd to join him in front of the cameras. His wife, Marie‑France van Heel, stepped forward, embraced him and placed a kiss on his forehead.
The couple have been together since their university days in Cambridge in the late 1980s. They have accompanied Burnham through his ascent from MP to Labour leader, Mayor of Greater Manchester, and now Prime Minister.
Marie‑France prefers to stay out of the public spotlight; she briefly waved before walking with Burnham through the iconic black door at No 10.
Known to family and friends as Frankie, she was described by a former professor as “the coolest girl in the college.” Both studied at Fitzwilliam College, where she later appeared on the television programme Blind Date while dating Burnham.
During that period she traveled to Gibraltar with a future Conservative official, highlighting her early connections across the political spectrum.
She met Burnham on her first day at university, with him a year senior. He told her he intended to become an MP that night, after which she left the room.
The pair married in 2000 after the birth of their first child. Burnham fulfilled his ambition the following year by being elected MP for Leigh.
Marie‑France is fluent in three languages and previously served as chief strategy officer for branding agency Heavenly, contributing to the design of logos for English Rugby and the BBC.
She now holds the position of chief marketing officer at Iduna, a green‑infrastructure company that operates a large portion of Manchester’s electric‑vehicle charging network.
Opposition parties have raised questions about a potential conflict of interest, but Burnham has affirmed that he disclosed his wife’s employment and played no role in any decisions involving Iduna.
The Burnhams have three children. Son Jimmy, born in 2000, works for the Royal College of Nursing, while daughters Rosie and Annie are in their early twenties; Rosie is employed by Jägermeister and Annie recently graduated from Cardiff University.
